Aerial yoga is a most unique experience, a childlike sense of defying gravity, familiar yoga poses transform as we're able to go deeper thanks to the support of the sling.

Aerial yoga is also the chance to face our reactions when we come to invert… Most of us in adult life don’t spend any time upside down. The gift of small group aerial sessiosn means Fredee has time to guide each new person safely to an inverted position or as far as they’re ready to go on the day.

The sling also offer wonderful restorative options, a chance to feel rocked, suspended, held, and nurtured. A most unique treat.

Physical benefits of aerial yoga include:

  • Increased full-body flexibility and strength: as this practice is a full-body type of movement, it strengthens all muscles. The hammock itself allows you to go deeper into the stretches and poses, further enhancing full-body flexibility.

  • Alleviates back and neck pressure: Sitting or standing all day enables gravity to weigh down the spine. However, being upside down in certain aerial moves can help lengthen and decompress the spine.

  • Promotes circulation: Given the nature of the poses and breathing through the movements, aerial yoga can improve blood circulation and digestion.

  • Improves core strength: In order to maintain stability throughout the different poses, it’s important to keep the abdominal muscles engaged throughout the practice.

  • Boosts confidence and mood: In addition to the opportunity to learn something new, aerial yoga makes more advanced yoga poses accessible to beginners, The inverted poses are also a chance to explore being suspended upside down and old fears coming up. Over time the boost in confidence and exhilaration is awe inspiring.

  • Low-impact exercise: Because of its low or zero-impact nature, aerial yoga is an excellent option for those who experience joint pain when exercising. Using gravity and suspension, aerial yoga allows you to create space in the body without compressing the joints.

Aerial yoga is not suitable during menstruation, early pregnancy, for anyone with high blood pressure, cataract, inner ear conditions affecting balance, vertigo, spinal slipped discs  - if in doubt email us and get medical clearance from your GP.

Aside of the beautiful location of the class (in a private countryside studio near Stokenchurch), I adored the fun factor that came with this class. Being able to explore and experience traditional poses from an aerial perspective felt really novel. I marvelled at just how clever it all was - how comfortable the sling felt against my body and how natural it felt to use this prop in so many different ways.

Doing the standing poses half suspended in air (rather than feet on ground) brings a whole new energy to it… being ‘weightless’ enabled me to really expand into poses a lot more; down dog (with the sling around the lower hips) felt so comfortable and elevating; going upside down (you can use the sling as a swing, before curling your legs around it and lowering yourself down into handstand) and also balancing poses such as half-moon pose and tree felt really safe and supported.

Fredee is an exceptional and accomplished yoga teacher (she also teaches other styles including Hatha and Adaptive) so has a wealth of knowledge that she draws upon to help you get the best out of it. Generally the whole thing gave me more confidence and enabled me to focus more on my alignment and expansion. It was fun experiencing poses in a completely new way and exploring new ways to balance the body. The sling was easy to figure out and one of the best part things about it is that you can adjust the height and width to suit you and your pose, thus enabling you to be super prescriptive in how you wish it to support you.

For me, I felt much freer in my body and in the poses generally. With each pose, I felt that surge of childlike excitement and wonder. For me, yoga already does this but aerial yoga took it to a new level. For anyone who hasn’t tried it, I recommend you do!
